Course Outline
Aim: To train participants to enable them to Referee Juvenile Youth Games.
The course aims to provide participants with knowledge of the rules of Juvenile Games and an understanding of fair play and the role of the referee:
- Identify the authority, powers and duties of the referees.
- State the basic technical and aggressive fouls.
- Investigate the different methods of recording scores.
- Describe the requirements and implications of GAA’s Code of Conduct.
- Demonstrate how effective communication can increase the quality of the game.
- Communicate verbally and use appropriate signals for fouls and violations.
- Practice how to complete match reports.
- Blow the whistle to correctly stop the game as required.
- Undertake a basic post-match review of your performance.
Entry Requirements:
- Course candidates must be 18 years or over
- Garda Vetted
- A fully registered member of a GAA Club
- Complete on online entry exam (Pass Rate of 70% is Required). Participants are encouraged to read the rules in advance of completing the entrance exam. Rules can be downloaded here.
Appropriate fee: €100 (includes Referee Gear)
Maximum attendance: 25
Duration: 4 sessions each lasting approximately 2 hours. The final session is a practical session usually on a Saturday morning. Full attendance required.
Practical involvement: Candidates will be expected to participate fully in the practical opportunities (the qualification cannot be completed unless you officiate during the course)
Methodology: The course will be carried out over four sessions and will then test the theoretical and practical knowledge of aspiring young referees.
Sessions 1 & 2 will deal with:
- Rules
- CCC2 rules and regulations
- Respect
- Communication
- Dissent / discipline
- Real match day scenarios
- Administration / Logistics
- Match reports
A variety of training techniques will be used to facilitate learning of each of the above issues. These methods will include, but not be limited to, role play, clip chart activities, PowerPoint presentations and group based activities.
Session 3 will have participants sit the final Level 3 Referee exam and participants must obtain 90% to pass the course.
Session 4 will carry out “on the pitch training” where each participant will have the opportunity to referee a part of a match and performance evaluation will be provided. Participants will be presented with their certificate and referees gear upon successfully completing the course.
